I just realized that Carnegie Mellon's recruiting weekend is the same week as the Glee Club concerts. The Glee Club concerts I've been in every single term since coming to Tech. And yet, CMU and Georgia Tech are really the only two grad schools I'm seriously considering at this point, and I think I really need to go in order to make an informed decision, as well as meet profs and look at labs.

I didn't think it'd be so painful to ask to be excused from the concerts. It makes sense, I suppose, when you consider that I've been putting in 3 dedicated hours of rehearsal a week all term. It's making me cry to think of all the awesome songs, and realize that I won't get to perform them. I won't get to sing "Geordie" after it's all finally fallen into place, and, oh god, "Sure On This Shining Night" is just so, so beautiful.

How can this possibly be the right decision?

ETA: I've decided not to go during the recruiting weekend after all. In large part because of Glee Club, really, but also because I realized that visiting both schools would mean I had less than 3 days to do all my finals. And since CMU is willing to fly me out anytime in March, I'll probably just try to find another time.

I know how you feel--I've had to miss two concert weekends because of field trips needed for graduation--and it's really sad to miss them. :/ I have sung in rehearsals anyway, but I do enjoy the final performance since you get to sing the song all the way through, hopefully at your best, instead in pieces.

I make up for it by singing along to recordings, but it's not the same, again.

It's funny, the things that seem unimportant in outside-real-world big-picture terms, but are hard to give up because they're important in other ways.

I'm glad that events are conspiring to make staying for the Glee Club concert the right decision in terms of the conventionally important (such as doing finals). :)

Speaking of conspiracies, are any of you, Vanessa, or Sarah (or anyone else from CAS) looking at going to AX this year? Justin (justins@chaos2.org) is trying to get a group together for hotel rooms again this year.

Can't speak for Vanessa or Sarah, but it's most likely that I'll want to go home and bum around for the (shortened) summer before going back to school. However, my senior thesis advisor did say that if we're close to a paper, he'd like me to stay through the end of the rye grass season, which means until early to mid-July, so there is still a chance that I'll be around.
