While reading Fellowship of the Ring, I found the origin of Treebeard's line, that he says to Merry and Pippin in Two Towers when he thinks they're orcs. It's from "In the House of Tom Bombadil":
Tom's words laid bare the hearts of trees and their thoughts, which were often dark and strange, and filled with a hatred of things that go free upon the earth, gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning: destroyers and usurpers.
I didn't really think about it when I heard it in the movie, but now that I think about it, it's rather out of character for Treebeard to grow that angry, especially considering he was made more placating in the movie. Silly Jackson, trying to mix up the Old Forest with the Ents, when it is more akin to the Huorns. All more to make Treebeard look like a senile old tree. *sigh*
