DONE!

I'm done with my first semester of law school!

It was pretty giddy and exciting afterwards, when they were serving drinks in the lounge. They made these really cute shot glasses for us that say "Class of 2009" and "1.5L". (But remind me not to do a shot of rum ever again. Man, did it burn.)

But as we split up to drive to lunch, we talked about how it was hard to be happy, per se, especially without grades. It was more like, "That was long, and it sucked, and now I'm done. God, I'm tired."

Now we all disperse for the holidays. People seem to be having more trouble than usual coordinating transportation despite the fact that the vast majority of us are leaving tomorrow from either SFO or SJC. Apparently my flight is one of the later ones, so I bumped my schedule up by half an hour so I can give two other people a ride. I guess that's the only token gesture I can offer the environment at the moment.

...yeah, I'm kind of free-associating right now. I took a nap when I got home, but the sleepiness is descending again. It's mostly okay -- since I'm DONE -- but I do still need to pack. Will be off to join my family in Hawaii for a week, then back to do job applications, report for jury duty, and hang out with high school friends.

Dropping by to shamelessly read your law school experiences... and I'm curious as to how they expect you to decide your specialisation before you've even finished your first year o_O. Especially before you've taken the subject. I went into law school firmly convinced that I wanted to do IP, all the way until I'd finished my third year.

...And then I actually worked in an IP department and changed my mind.

And ended up in Finance, which I swore in my first year I would never touch with a 20 foot pole :D;

But either way, HI! I'm a terrible, terrible law geek, and I always love hearing about the experiences of students in other jurisdictions. Forgive the insistent rambling!

I don't think anyone really expects people to have their specializations firmly decided, although some aspects, like journals and public interest opportunities feel more deterministic. I stay far away from criminal law, so I was surprised how seemingly organized and cohesive the group is. Public interest in general feels very much like everyone doing it is sure they want to stick with it. But when I talk to other students about job search, it doesn't sound like anyone really has much of an idea about what they want to do. Mostly, they probably start out from what they know -- hence IP and environmental for me, due to my science background -- and just try to explore through summer jobs, talks, and classes. I did audit a Law and Technology class in undergrad, so I at least have a bit of exposure to IP, but hardly enough to say for sure.

Your experience sounds like something that could happen to me, because I also wouldn't touch finance with a 20 foot pole right now. :P My mom is a finance professor, but I've never understood the subject. Going into law school, several people told me I should do corporate law because "that's where the money is", but I'm pretty certain now that I have no head for business. ^^;;

Love the icon, BTW! :D
