What is your Perfect Major? (PLEASE RATE ME!!<3)

This is actually a pretty good result. I know I should be a linguistics major -- you'd think they could have been less obvious about it, what with the whole "I love studying languages!" question -- but I wouldn't know what to do with my life afterwards. With that in mind, I picked my next interest, chemistry. I thought ChE had shaken most of the chemistry out of me, though, and that I was becoming more of an engineer -- mainly because I've become more S and less N lately Myers-Briggs-wise, and I see that as kind of an engineer versus scientist sort of line. Must have been that "molecular" question that I don't understand. Why would the word molecular fascinate me? I don't know it's etymology, but it doesn't seem like it'd have a particularly interesting one. I like things that are molecular, but that's not the same. Clearly the quiz itself was not written by an English major. :P

Anyway, been wanting to post those results for a while now. Now back to copying notes and playing catch-up with my classes.

My brother majored in linguistics. What has he done with it? Well, he's working at a company that designs voice-driven systems (particularly those over-the-phone systems, e.g. "if you want to do [whatever], say 'Yes'"). And going back to school, because the work he's doing now is more programming than linguistics - he's going to see about getting a CS degree. FWIW, I don't think he regrets the linguistics degree at all - that's certainly where his interests were, and even where they remain. It's just that the job prospects for Linguistics majors usually involve research, and there aren't enough positions for all the folks who graduate with that degree.

Yeah, that's pretty much the picture I have of it. And I don't think I really want to do research, although I get excited about surveys I get from alums who are doing linguistics experiments and asking things about native languages and stuff.

Those voice driven things are pretty cool. My dad called Pacbell DSL tech support over break, and it was all voice-based, and it could recognize responses from a long list of connection problems and such. Whereas I still remember playing with this primitive map coloring program at the Tech Museum (?) where you had to speak really slowly and deeply into the mic, so you'd stand there and growl, "red," a few times and eventually the selected state would turn blue. XD
