A year-end meme.
Dec. 31st, 2004 01:00 am[I'm catching up on all my friends' posts I missed while in Taiwan, so there are lots of memes to steal.]
This one's from
koshiroryuu.
1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?
Realized many of my fantasies, like living and working in Japan, if only for a short while.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Don't make them, don't keep them.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not that I can think of. The closest is Tomomi-san, who helped me with the Japan Internship paperwork.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not that I can think of. The closest is the Ch41a TA. =/
5. What countries did you visit?
Taiwan, Japan, Canada (sort of).
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
A faster computer. And a billion other things, but mainly that.
7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Hm, I tend not to remember the dates of momentous events, so none, I guess. I mean, there are memorable days, like when I discovered how much of an evil bastard the 95c prof was, but I hardly remember what day or even month that was.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Hm, I think I'll have to go with
koshiroryuu and say "Not dying." Seriously, I don't feel like I've done anything amazing this year.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not getting to know any professors nor take any real initiative in general with regards to figuring out what I want to do after I graduate and preparing for grad/law school. Also, missing the deadline for the Japanese proficiency test.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
There was the huge mess with my wisdom tooth socket that got infected and had to be drained twice. There's still a bump there and my muscle tone on that side of my face is shot, so there's this droopy bit behind my chin and I can't keep my lips completely together when I rinse my mouth. The oral surgeon I went to originally says the bump is probably bone that grew out because there was a lot of blood in that area, and it should smooth back in as my muscles tighten over the next six months, so we'll see about that.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Probably my PocketPC, which is slim and long-lasting and ever-so-useful for reading eBooks.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Buh... Iono. I'm too cynical and negative a person to answer a question like that.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Pretty much all of humanity, in particular every last person who voted to ban gay marriage in his respective state. Oh, and a certain EE who wrote countless fallacious and ridiculous articles in the school newspaper against gay marriage, including such brilliant arguments such as the fact that marriage licenses are just pieces of paper that confer no inherent benefits; you know, the same way money is just paper with no inherent value except possibly as kindling and toilet paper.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Tuition, but that wasn't my money, per se. My own money probably went mainly to manga, the bunches of stuff I bought in Japan, and the sightseeing I did there.
15. What did you get really excited about?
Being in Japan, of course.
16. What song will always remind you of 2004?
I don't really connect songs to years.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you happier or sadder?
Happier, I think. Maybe about the same outwardly, but I think I'm more satisfied and at peace with myself. (Perhaps not much more, meaning still far, far away from the destination, but a little closer, at least.) Ignoring the anxiety about what I'm going to do in a year and a half, which might [and should] be a bit worse now.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Reading books. There's so much stuff I want to reread, I'm starting to be blind to new things, and I don't seem to have enough time for either. Also, I wish I'd done more web design, and kept up with all the new scriptiness and such, and opened more sites and put up more content.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Freaking out and crying for stupid reasons. Less banging my head against the wall over problem sets would have been nice, too.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
In the photo studio being cold and uncomfortable and afraid to move for fear of messing up my hair. People don't really celebrate Christmas that much in Taiwan, so I hardly noticed it.
21. Did you fall in love in 2004?
I'm not sure. Maybe I was already in love.
22. How many one-night stands?
Um, none? o.O;
23. What was your favorite TV program?
I think the only things I really watched, aside from anime, was Jeopardy and lots of CSI. I think the CSI wins by a small margin, but only because I miss Ken Jennings. If you include anime, definitely Kyou Kara Maou.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
The aforementioned EE is the only one I can think of at the moment.
25. What was the best book you read?
Like I said already, I didn't get to read much, so probably just Hyperion. Not even any of the manga I've been reading stands out all that much.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I don't think I started listening to Evanescence until this year, so I guess that would be it. Oh, and I didn't realize just how extremely awesome Initial D music is until this year.
27. What did you want and get?
To go to Japan! (Yes, that was the highlight of the year and I will keep harping on it.)
28. What did you want and not get?
More free time. Oh, and lots of money and cool go stones. :P
29. What was your favorite film of this year?
I can't remember watching very many movies. I'll just be lame and say Return of the King Extended Edition.
30. What did you do on your birthday?
Eat. Sleep. Probably watched some Shaman King or played Lunar. I was all alone in the dorm over break, so it wasn't very notable.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
More free time to do all the things I wanted to do, like read and play more RPGs.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?
If I wear clothes for two days at a time, I can make my laundry last twice as long! It wasn't that bad, in general, but I'm always hovering around "What is this thing called 'fashion'?"
33. What kept you sane?
Glee Club and sleep.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Extended scenes --> more Faramir. 'nuff said. Also, I kind of rediscovered how awesome Okiayu Ryoutarou is, from replaying Tales of Destiny over the summer and rewatching Gravitation with the club.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Judging from previous answers, clearly gay marriage. Although in general I was pretty ignorant and happy in my bubble this year. Shame on me, considering it was a presidential election year.
36. Who do you miss?
My high school friends.
37. Who was the best new person you met?
Caroline, my fellow intern in Japan.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004.
Wait and let things settle; don't overreact from the start. Oh wait, I haven't learned that one yet.
Maybe, to be more trusting, of myself and others and of things in general, and to be less of a worrywart. Can't say I've completely learned that, but I think I'm much better now.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Maybe "sakihokore, ano sora ni mukatte, tatoe chiisa na na mo naki hana de mo" (bloom to the fullest, aiming for that sky, even if you're a small, nameless flower). But that's hardly summing it up.
