elwenLOL, here's a nice example of how Japanese people really do go, "aww, how cute, look at the foreigner trying to understand us," upon seeing students of the language and the dedicated fans who scanlate and fansub.
On the other hand, I suppose it's arguably a better attitude than people who say, "You're in America, so speak our language or else."
