First 14, now 19, hours.
Sep. 11th, 2004 05:21 am[This entry is about my wisdom teeth, but no gory details.]
The Vicodin is so ditched. The nausea is horrible; I'll take the pain any day. About half an hour to an hour afterwards, it just hits me, and I sit gasping for several minutes, willing my stomach to control itself, while thoughts flash through my head about how much it would suck to vomit in my present state: I don't know how wide I can open my jaw, and what if I got stomach acid into the holes? Accompanied by the nausea is something I'm not sure is dizziness or lightheadedness. My blood roars through my head, and my vision darkens with black thorns.
So I developed this schedule of taking medicine, being forced into bed by the nausea -- which, thankfully, helps a lot -- and then falling asleep until the next dose only to repeat it all.
[At this point, this entry was interrupted by the fact that apparently penicillin will also cause some nausea, though not nearly as bad as the Vicodin. Even though I've never had averse reactions to penicillin before. Bah.]
Anyway, so this is a bad schedule because when I'm sleeping, I can't be putting ice to my cheeks and trying to avoid swelling. Right now, there's not much swelling on the left, although sometimes some soreness in the jaw. My right cheek is swollen such that that corner of my face looks like a lumpy, rounded square. The swelling is a hard bunch of muscle, as far as I can tell, and I can't open my mouth more than an inch, and doing that hurts my jaw like using any sore muscle would.
I'm definitely a bit more spacey than usual, but not nearly as high as I expected. When I was trying to read, though, occasionally I found I couldn't quite understand a sentence properly, if it had convoluted grammar of the sort I'm so fond of. And then I'm just really tired. I end up falling asleep with my lights on a lot. One time I was laying in bed with an ice pack (also known as a bag of frozen green beans) and I somehow managed to wake up every fifteen minutes to half an hour or so to switch sides, and then drift off again. After about an hour and half of this, I finally got my sister to put away the beans and "formally" went to bed.
Okay, well, time to go knock myself out with penicillin again. 9_9

Date: 2004-09-11 06:38 pm (UTC)*hugs* Hope you feel better soon! I've gotten my wisdom teeth out, too... but I had it a lot better - went under full anesthesia, not shots... tho I've had a bunch of other teeth pulled so I sympathize with you on the shots hurting=(, and my recovery was very painless and quick - I did fine just taking advil.
Hm.
Date: 2004-09-12 08:42 am (UTC)Oh, and I couldn't open my mouth for two weeks. Shouldn't have taken off the ice packs on the first day just 'cause it stopped hurting ...
Re: Hm.
Date: 2004-09-12 07:05 pm (UTC)Did you apply heat after the first two days? My thing says that should help bring down the swelling -- which I assume is related to the tightness of muscle and limited mouth opening.
I hate the taste of blood. Got too much of it as a little kid.
