Something about FF8 brings out the anal completionist in me. Or maybe it's just that I haven't really played any video games lately aside from Tales of Destiny, which isn't very rich in sidequests aside from the annoying-as-hell Tower of Druaga.

So yeah. It's been 35 hours and I'm piloting Balamb Garden, which apparently opens up, like, seven sidequests all at once. Each of them wonderfully time-consuming in its own way, of course. I got the Tonberry GF, which was the most annoying thing in the world. Killing 20 Tonberrys, possessing ungodly high HP and rewarding me with nothing more than 1 AP and occasionally a Chef's Knife. Sometimes I have to remind myself why I bother.

When I played FF9, I completely ignored pretty much all of the sidequests. Never did Chocobo Hot n' Cold, never found Mognet nor delivered mail, gave up Tetra Master as utterly incomprehensible. (Although I did a fair share of Chocobo Hot n' Cold and Tetra Master while my sister was playing through the game.) I was better about it in FFX, until I found out just how impossible it was to get the ultimate weapons. (But I was so enamoured of the temple puzzles that I got all of the summons.) So maybe it's accumulated guilt or something. At least the cards in FF8 are actually useful.

Now that I've started, though, I'm going to feel pretty bad if I don't get every last card, and I just know it's going to be so painful. I already failed to get the Seifer card twice: the first time because I hadn't started playing cards yet, and the second time because Cid simply wouldn't use it, no matter how many times I challenged him. And as far as I can tell, the next chance I get, random will be in effect. *sigh* Not to mention Balamb was inaccessible before I learned of the Queen of Cards and I have no idea if I even still have a chance at that sidequest.

It was neat, though, to find out that *spoiler* was the CC Group King. I kind of suspected, after Heart, and because an idea was planted when at FH Martine brags that he has all the cards he confiscated from students at Galbadia Garden. (Still seems to me like an awfully dishonorable way to collect them, though.)

So at my current rate, I'll be at around 80 hours before I beat the game. Which isn't terrible, I suppose. FFX was at 108, thanks to half-hour long battles at the Monster Arena, and all that time spent racing chocobos and catching butterflies. *shudder* I don't remember FF9, but it was probably pretty high from maxing out Dragon Crest. I want to say that FF6 was at only 60, but I may be thinking of the level I had my characters at the first time I beat it. (Which must be the stupidest thing I've ever done in any RPG. "Nice job, your entire party is vulnerable to every level spell there is." x_x) Most sprite games I finish in around 40 to 45, I think.

...um, yeah. If you ever wanted numerical proof of just how sad I am.

(Let's not go into how many total hours I must have spent playing Pokémon.)

Anyways, I'm still on the second disc, but I really do like Squall. It's amusing the way Rinoa pokes fun at him, but I can also relate to the way he thinks. I find it cute when he's tossing around in bed, and when he gets frustrated that everyone looks up to him as the leader. I loved the part where he talked to a guy in FH and thought, "This guy sounds like me. I guess I don't sound very nice." ^o^ I can start to see how his change of heart comes about, and, well, if it was well written, I wouldn't fight it, but I guess there must be reasons why people dislike him so much. I suppose in the end, Zidane will win the day. ^.~

...or Riku. >.>

I logged 80-ish hours to finish all the sidequests and collect every single card in FF8 (and have everyone at level 99). It was much fun. I *never* could do it in FF9.

Tonberry is the cutest GF in the whole thing, though ... ^^ ... I want a stuffed Tonberry ... or make my own ... ^^;

Related to that, you can't actually avoid MOST of the summons in FF-X. Only the triplets, and the Seymour one. (If I remember right.)

Chocobo Hot and Cold rewards you with Ozma though. ;) Mmm, insane boss fights.

And the only ultimate weapon I'm missing in FF-X is the one that requires bolt dodging... I got to 183 once, but then I slipped up. >< Sweaty palms.

IIRC, The Magus Sisters, Anima (aka "the Seymour one"), and Yojimbo were all optional Aeons... there might have been more.

Holy crap... the only ultimate weapon I ever got was Yuna's... and possibly Auron's, I don't remember. I really wanted Lulu's (I think that's the bolt-dodging one) and Kimahri's... Ah well, it's all behind me now. v.v

Have you fought all of the monsters in the Monster Arena? I don't think I ever beat any of the special monsters. I just killed that one thing too many times... that one that falls on its back and gives you speed spheres.
