Watched Twilight.

It wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. Probably because my expectations were quite low. But it was actually kind of enjoyable.

Some things that helped:
- sister to snark with when things got too ridiculous
- watching most of it at 1.5x :P
- inherent weakness for Mary Sue

Here, have a spoiler-cut. Not really for plot spoilers, but more for if you want to form your own impressions of the film without my prebiasing you.

First things first:

OMG HE SPARKLES.

And:

Vampire baseball FTW!

But someone explain to me why they had to play in the thunderstorm? (I may have missed the explanation with the 1.5x.) I thought it was going to be something big like water deprives them of their superpowers or something.

I think at least 70% of my enjoyment of the movie came from the Cullens. They are really interesting and could go a long way in the hands of a competent writer. ...which probably makes it a good thing that the movie did not go into much depth about them, but that was still disappointing. When they first walked by the cafeteria window, I totally thought, "NIGHT CLASS!"

It's good that I didn't think too much more about Vampire Knight during the movie, because since then I've been drawing too many connections. First, always with the girl being super-tasty -- it's getting old. And because Yuuki and Bella are alike in that way, it makes Kaname and Edward more alike, too. Though I have to say I like Edward more than I was liking Kaname the last time I watched Vampire Knight. Not that I ever liked Kaname that much, but Edward still deserves some points, if only for not being all tragically noble-blooded and crap.

Overall, I could definitely see the Mary Sue attractiveness of the movie. I am certain I had phases during my teenage years when I would have been all over this. I think the things I found to be all over instead (like Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality) are way better, but I'm not going to fool myself that I wouldn't have fallen into the trap.

Aaanyways.

I am annoyed that Bella and Edward have no personality. I mean, for Bella's part, I guess that's what makes a good Mary Sue. But Edward just wasn't getting his part right. The whole "I am powerful and dangerous" thing fell flat on its face because (1) it was mixed in with way too much angst and (2) it was utterly ridiculous. Superman flying over the city with Lois in his arms is romantic. Jumping around trees like a monkey with your girlfriend on your back is not.

There were a few scenes between them that I liked, because they were totally out of character and belonged in a much cleverer movie. (Namely the "Anaphase. *shove*" conversation and the "I need answers." "Yes. No. To get to the other side. 1.77245." conversation. Sorry, I'm just a nerd. If they had actually been nerdy, that would have been awesome. But as it was, it was just wishful thinking. [On my part? On Meyer's part? On the producer's part? I don't know.])

Well, at least I know I'll be up for watching the next movie for more Cullen family. And quidditch baseball.

You're right about the "cleverer movie" part. And if they had both been nerds, I might have really liked/respected it =)

The reason they can only play in thunderstorms is so the sound made from the crack of the bat blends in with the thunder, so that humans don't hear it and go investigate.

Ohhhhh. Yeah, that totally didn't come across at 1.5x. ^^;;
