Don't you dare tell me, Windows Media Player, that you are the only program compatible with my files. Oh, you're so clever, having your "list of compatible players" link go straight to WMP 10. This is why you will never win the war.

Nothing comes between me and my Winamp, dammit.

WORD! *shakes fist*

I need a new computer and hope it's as easy to downgrade to XP from Vista as my Dad and his colleagues say.If not I see myself cursing M$ even more often than usual (though I'm generally a Windows 'advocate')...

The issue of downgrading to XP actually came up on a mailing list I'm on recently. Granted, I have no personal knowledge of this and it might only apply in the U.S., but maybe it's helpful:

For ~$50 a lot of computer stores will replace your vista with XP. Most Vista business editions (and some others) come with a license to use either it or XP, so if you don't necessarily need to buy a copy. . . .

The reason I suggest going to them rather than to a nerdy friend/yourself is that XP installation on machines with newer SATA drives is rather difficult, you need a custom-made driver disk that frankly I'd pay someone to make for me; windows is a pain.

Though on some BIOS you can set ATA emulation (it's the choice that isn't AHCI but is for the same setting) then just install XP normally/have a friend do it. (You can set it back to AHCI after installing XP and all your drivers to increase disk speed)

I'm probably going to build my next computer much as I built this one (and by "built" I mean "watched my boyfriend put it together after I was too pansy to force the RAM into their slots"), so hopefully I won't have to worry about the Vista problem...

Yes, this is what other people told me to do, too. The problem is that I won't be getting a computer from a regular store but through other sources (my Dad used to work for a big German computer manufacturer and still gets a discount). I always get my PCs that way and so I'm used to doing things by myself but I've heard and read so many horrible stories regarding Vista and the downgrade process that I'm very wary, even though my father and his colleagues assure me you only get into trouble if you try to install pre SP 3 XP versions or try to install XP on computers with quad-core processors because XP can't handle them.

Or maybe I need a boyfriend who knows enough about computers to do it for me. Unfortunately, I never had a bf who knew more about computers than me *lol* (not that I know so much. But maybe I unconsciously prefer men who can't interfere when I do stuff with my comp... =P).

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who still swears by Winamp. :)

Considering I have at least 3 skinners on my flist, I'd say my loyalty to Winamp is pretty strong. ^^ It helps that I can't stand iTunes, which is the only other popular player I know of. WMP is like IE, it's not popular so much as an easy default -- ahh, monopolies.

Viva Winamp!! Even after AOL tried turning it into bloatware, it's still my favorite player.
