I got addicted to the lyrics of another Utada Hikaru song, Wait and See ~Risk~. She just says things so poetically and yet so plainly. I really like the stanza, "Give me the power to accept the things I can't change, and to change the things I can't accept."

The lyric you quoted is very like the old "Serenity Prayer" that can be seen alongside cute kittens and fake flower arrangements on fluffy "inspirational" cards and posters: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Or something like that.

This lyric, though, suggests a duality that I like, as if there are only two choices in everything: accept or change. It is a rather simplistic sentiment, but I guess that's where it's charm lies. Not surprising that you like it so much, given your own penchant for duality.

Yeah, I know the Serenity Prayer, but aside from the subtle differences in meaning, the context is also entirely different. For one thing, the song is mostly addressed to a lover, I would think. And the "give me" is in a slang form, so it's more in the tone one would use to, say, ask a friend for money, than to appeal to some higher power. The effect is entirely different, IMHO.

Yay for duality. :P
