Movies, whee!
Dec. 27th, 2003 02:47 pmWe saw The Last Samurai yesterday. I've never cried so much during a single movie, but it was so good, if so sad.
Five things:
2. The subtitles for the Japanese dialogues were crap.
3. Tom Cruise's character sure picked up the language quickly, even if his pronunciation was always a bit foreign.
4. Random ninjas -- wtf??
5. Go see it!
And then I'm going to steal this Lord of the Rings survey thing from
adenine.
when did you first become a LOTR fan?: Sometime around fourth grade, IIRC.
have you read the books?: I've only read LotR and the Silmarillion. I've read about half of Unfinished Tales and a bit of the Book of Lost Tales. Someday, I want to own all of the HoME books -- assuming they continue to publish them in the pretty paperback versions -- and then have time to read them all, of course.
seen the movies?: Of course.
what is it that you love about LOTR?: I've always loved the consistency of Tolkien's world-building. I've also grown sentimental in my old age and really like LotR in particular because its story is so beautiful and sad. Also, I just think it's a very well put together story, the way things start together, then pull apart when the Fellowship goes their separate ways, and yet everything comes back together at the end, when all of the important events coincide.
how many times did you see each of the movies: FotR - maybe 8. TT - 5. RotK - 2.
times you've read the books: 3 times in full, I think, although I've read Fellowship the most, since more than once I've quailed somewhere in the midst of Two Towers, probably Book IV, and decided to start from the beginning again when I got back to the books again.
just how obsessed are you with LOTR?: I'm not rabid, but the books have a place deep in my heart. When I have time, I enjoy browsing threads on alt.fan.tolkien or rec.arts.books.tolkien, although I will never know enough to participate in the really scholarly discussions. I think it would be cool to learn to write in Tengwar or to speak Elvish but haven't taken the time to do so. It's not the kind obsession that monopolizes my waking hours for days at a time, like some I've had.
can you speak elvish?: Like I said above, no. I know a couple word roots, though, and can parse quite a few of the names in the books.
did you dress up for any of the movie premieres: I wore my cloak, which apparently makes me look like a Hobbit, but didn't do anything fancier than that.
most memorable moment as a fan: I can't really think of any.
- - -favorites- - -
favorite of the books: I think I've always liked FotR the best, but it's a hard choice. Fellowship just seems more lighthearted, or something. It's much less epic scale than the other two. I like the looks at the small things.
favorite of the movies: Again Fellowship, I think. It at least still has a bit of the warmth and lightness that's really to be found throughout the books, but the movie lost it quickly. As long as it's the extended Fellowship with not-evil!Galadriel.
favorite overall character: Faramir
character you find most attractive: Faramir!
favorite hobbit: Merry, I think, but I really like them all about equally.
favorite elf: Maedhros, but he's from the Silmarillion. In LotR, I like Gildor, even if I never remember about him.
favorite human: Faramir again. ^o^
favorite dwarf: Are there that many from which to choose? I like Balin, if I remember correctly my dwarves, but it's been a while since I last read the Hobbit.
favorite wizard: Radagast. I love the whole idea of being able to speak with animals. He's a wuss, though.
favorite orc: Goodness, I have no idea.
favorite villian: The Witch King of Angmar, although I think he looks a lot cooler without the helmet thing.
favorite horse: Merry's ponies that he lost at Bree.
favorite scene from the books: Faramir's conversations with Frodo in Ithilien. *sigh* We all know what became of those in the movies. >.<
coolest creature: The Balrog. And it had Wings(tm).
scariest creature: Shelob. *shudder*
cutest creature: Uh... Hobbits?
favorite quote: books: Of what I remember right now... "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. ... My heart tells me that [Gollum] has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before the end; and when that comes, the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many -- yours not least." - Gandalf.
movie: "I can avoid being seen when I want, but to disappear completely -- that is a rare gift." - Aragorn; although I like the deliveries of many lines in the movies. (And of course hated those of others.)
- - -Middle Earth- - -
do you have a hobbit name?: No. I can't even imagine how to begin to come up with one.
an elf name?: Elwen. 'Êl' meaning either "star" or "elf", and '-wen' being a feminine suffix, so you could say it means "star maiden" or "elf maiden". The original intention was the former.
where would you want to live in Middle Earth?: Rivendell or Lorien, I've never been able to decide.
what kind of creature would you be?: Ents are cool.
what's your weapon of choice?: A bow, if I'm capable of learning how to use one.
are you good/evil/somewhere in between?: Probably good, but largely indifferent to world events, kind of like the Elves.
