I think part of the problem is that the class isn't all that well suited for people who don't already know some spectroscopy. It's like the lectures deal with in-depth justifications of the solution process, without really explaining what the solution process is. I would always find the sets pretty hard because useful information was so hard to glean from the lectures, and I didn't have time to read the text (that is if you don't count flipping through and plugging numbers into boxed formulas). I haven't seen the midterm, but I know how much the 'learning-experience' exam phenomenon can suck. Best of luck to you... I know you'll do well.
