I guess in the end I was glad I went to karaoke tonight, even though the place ended up not having nearly as much Japanese music as I'd hoped or expected. I got to meet a lot of the Chinese people in Avery, and it was just generally a lot of fun.
So for music, they did actually have Addicted to You and Secret of My Heart, which are my most favorite songs, although Addicted to You had weird back-up singing on the chorus which kind of messed me up. I think Secret of My Heart is one of my best karaoke songs; Addicted to You I've always known is hard.
Then there were a bunch of songs I'd heard before, but that I didn't know well. Kind of like, "Oh, hey, it's that song." Like Aitai and Lion Heart, or Time Goes By. There were a couple more Utada Hikaru songs that I wasn't familiar with, like Automatic, and the same for Ayumi Hamasaki, like Kanariya. I was really disappointed that there was no Globe nor Da Pump.
I got to hear a lot of pretty Chinese songs, although I don't know what any of them are called. I also got to hear Victory with Cantonese lyrics, which was really scary, because if you listen to the melody, you would swear that it's unsingable, but apparently you can . . . really fast.
At the end, we decided we should all sing one song we all knew, and it ended up being this Chinese song that I actually knew (kind of). I'd translate the title as "the girl on the other side looks over". It's horrible, I know, but not as bad as if I actually tried to give the romanization. I think you will know what song I'm talking about it if you know it, so. But yeah, that was a blast, because we were all just singing all-out, no inhibitions.
So overall, it was a wonderful night. I really need to find a Japanese karaoke place now, so we can make it an anime club trip. It would be so awesome.
