I am done sampling for the season, yay. Now for shows to gradually drop out as they bore me. Fortunately, this second batch had more early flops than the first.

07-Ghost - Meet the first show of the season to make it onto my definite watch list. This was kind of how it went:

5 minutes in: "I guess this is good if I need a bishie fix. A little bothered by the protagonist -- I don't like him with Wolfram's voice, and he looks like Suzaku and Rolo's love child."

After episode 1: "I guess it follows the I-have-no-idea-what's-going-on-but-at-least-I'm-not-bored trend, but I think it will be good. I'm used to Teito, but I still think everyone in the series looks like someone from somewhere else -- there's the Fuuma-looking guy, the Sanzo-looking guy, etc. And then the preview was narrated by Murata. @_@ Also, I'm hoping it doesn't go Geass/X with the whole BFF-turned-enemies thing. C'mon Mikage, you can hold out!"

From episode 2 on, I was too engaged to have any more bloggy thoughts. After episode 3, I am pretty much hooked. Though I might just want to know what happens to Mikage. But they seem to be taking their time with that, so by the time I find out, there will probably be some other reason for me to keep watching.

Valkyria Chronicles - Dropped after 2 episodes. I kind of like Welkin as easy-going empty-headed naturalist dude, but I really hate that he's paired with tsundere Alicia, who you could instantly tell will eventually fall in love with him. I also kind of like Welkin's mechanics-minded sister that looks like Hotaru whose name I can't remember at the moment. But I don't like military series, and I don't like the WWII setting, and I think Alicia and that wussy rich girl would get on my nerves way too much. Besides, it's not like I'm desperate for series to watch or anything.

Eden of the East - Dropped after the first episode. There was utterly nothing there that made me want to keep watching. The characters were blah and did not get me to care about them. The story teased but didn't excite. I know there are lots of people out there who like it, but it's not for me. I think mainly I don't see the main character being anyone I could like given his reaction to the situation he was in. Ironically the Jason Bourne reference -- which I did like -- kind of shows why: if he was anything like Bourne, or Kirika, or any number of other amnesiacs-who-must-have-been-involved-in-intrigue-before-losing-their-memory, and not like a carefree idiot, I might have stuck with it.

Phantom - Speaking of amnesiacs and intrigue, Phantom is a way better choice than Eden of the East. It follows in the long line of dark, brooding Bee Train series that began with Noir. I like it so far, but I suspect that eventually the pace will be too brooding and slow-moving, the characters too emotionless, and the plot too confusing, much like Noir and Avenger. (I never even tried Madlax or El Cazador de Bruja, but I'd bet they were the same.) But for the moment, it is what I love about Noir: sleek, clean action that's more like a spy fiction novel than shoot-em-up-and-blow-em-up spy movies. Also, there is a slight variation from the previous series: one of the main characters is a guy. So far, they've been acting rather asexual, so I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make. But from what I've seen, I'm guessing either the two will bond and together rise against the syndicate that controls them, or he'll try to one-up her out of jealousy or some need to be the best, and I think gender will matter either way.

...oh yeah, and there is that it is apparently based on a dating sim. How this plot worked as a dating sim, I cannot imagine.

Guin Saga - Dropped after the first episode. I can only handle so many amnesiacs per season, and Teito and Zwei are probably too many as it is. Also, this series is like Jyu-Oh-Sei meets Utawarerumono. Weird. I was mostly hit by the Jyu-Oh-Sei vibes. Twin white-haired kids end up in hostile natural environment after their parents are brutally murdered? One of the twins is a survivalist and the other is a wuss? Unfortunately, I doubt they will deal with the wussy one in the same way Jyu-Oh-Sei did, and he was starting to get unbearable. And the other two characters didn't particularly appeal, either. I think at that point it's not worth waiting to see what the fourth guy is like, even though he's probably a rogue and I would probably adore him. Bottom line was that I could see how it could turn out to be a cool fantasy adventure, but I didn't have enough of a sense of where it was going and nothing to string me along.

So that's the season, as far as I'm concerned. I've been busy finishing sampling, so I haven't gotten back to the other series, so the jury is still out on Asura Cryin', Shangri-La, and Pandora Hearts. But I think I will hold off on Fullmetal Alchemist (both series) for the time being. Someday, I will probably be in the mood again for the action and adventure that it delivers so well, but not right now.

In the meantime, I got back into Kyou Kara Maou. It's hard to talk about it without spoilers at this point, so here we go. )

I'll probably be finishing that and Tytania sometime soon. (And then I won't make another anime post for five months by which time I'll have forgotten anything I wanted to say about them.)
