I didn't know Funimation did pr0n...
Feb. 22nd, 2009 09:16 amFor anyone who hasn't been paying attention (which I assume is most of you), Funimation has been grabbing up licenses lately like it was the good ol' days of anime licensing, before the recession and the general slump in U.S. anime distribution. Most of the titles are pretty underwhelming, IMHO -- stuff like El Cadajor de Bruja (which I think of as "Noir take 3... or was it 4?") and Druaga (which half the market will have watched off Crunchyroll already). If we expand the window back in time to their last wave of licenses, at the end of December, there's maybe a little more meat -- Slayers Revolution and Evolution-R (but no one's suprised) and Nabari no Ou (I liked the start, but am concerned that any shounen ninja series would end at 26 episodes). None of these are getting me to pull out the pocketbook anytime soon.
Today I saw something more interesting: Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi.
First of all, it worries me that Mania describes it as a "12-episode" series, because it was most definitely a 6 episode series originally. Each episode is pretty tightly contained, and there are huge time jumps between episodes until you get to the end. But I suppose Darker than Black handled episode-pairs all right. I don't think the Mnemosyne episodes, being originally made to run 50 minutes, will take the splitting very well, though.
The other thing about Mnemosyne is that it is basically pornographic in a lot of places. And not just like naked girls and sex and stuff. It's got really graphic BDSM scenes -- some of them have a point, a lot of them are just there for shock value -- and I think it takes a strong stomach to watch. So... I wonder how Funi will manage all of that. I mean, I guess it's gory in non-sexual ways, too. So just super-NC-17 overall. I think I hear the sound of Funi's market evaporating...
I mean, I liked the series. It was very dark and very strange in some places, but a good story and artistic in an accessible way. (And I'm a girl, so I didn't just look through the art to the boobs.) But not something I expected in a hundred years to be licensed. So we'll see what happens with that.
In the meantime, I'm still waiting for a good opportunity to buy the rest of Slayers. (Damn you, RightStuf, for having a super-sweet bundle after I already had Try!)
