The Animenfo description of a new show called Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto:

End of Edo Era - It was the last time a man lived as a samurai and fought entrusting his life and briefs to a sword.

It was the time when long peaceful Tokugawa Dynasty began to be overshadowed triggered by the arrival of Westerners. During the upheaval, when youths were seeking for new age, there was an existence that brought turmoil and chaos. It was called Hasha no Kubi, or the Head of Conqueror. It was said that the person who could obtain the head awoke in revolution time could rule over the whole country. On the other hand, there was another shadow existence called Eternal Assassin. They have been destined to fight Hasha no Kubi in order to seal. Both had been fighting each other behind the history. Their fights have affected the history involving those who wanted the power.

Someone wanted it for themselves, someone wanted it for avenges, and someone wanted it for their ideal.

Their thoughts cross each other over the Hasha no Kubi. Their thoughts put tougher as if they were complicated gear wheels. Then, it began to move the history as if it became an engine that moved to the future.

I was just going to quote the first sentence, but then I realized that the rest of it was pretty amusing, too. I assume it's a translation of some description somewhere, but I couldn't find it on the official site, so unfortunately I can't tell you whether they actually entrust their "briefs to a sword". :P

In related news, I was kind of interested in watching based on the description, however Engrish-y, and from the art on AniDB, but looking at the character designs on the official site, I'm thinking maybe not after all. It looks like another Basilisk, which I liked for the awesome storytelling -- and I heartily approve it being shown in club this year -- but some of those character designs were really nasty.

But OMG, D.Gray-man is so awesome. And if Allen reminded me of Ed Elric before, man, the beginning of the first episode was totally FMA flashback.

(11/21/06) ETA: So I watched a bit of the first episode just to make sure I didn't want to follow the series -- it felt slow-ish, people talked in old-fashioned Japanese but sounded incredibly fake, and the character designs remind me of Witch Hunter Robin (which is a bad thing) -- but I did catch the intro lines: they entrust their lives and pride to a sword. [At least according to Oyasumi. The word sounds like either "shingen" or "shinden" to me, neither of which makes sense in context, so.] Also, the opening is by FictionJunction YUUKA, so at least I got a cool new song out of it. :D
