[Am hanging out in Blacker until the Card Office reopens -- will kill someone if it stays closed again. Figured I might as well write this while I have nothing better to do, as it's been bouncing around in my head the last couple of days. Also, Ditch Day is tomorrow.]

So after the third episode of Melody of Oblivion, I'm pretty hooked. It's not exceptionally original in its storyline, and it's got a bit of cheesiness -- or plain weirdness -- here and there, but overall it seems like a nice dark adventure with some philosophy thrown in for good measure. I'm thinking "ignorance is bliss" and pascifism versus struggling against overwhelming odds is going to be a continual theme.

Anyhow, I've been thinking that I haven't read a decent description of what it's about -- most of the anime sites tend to rip each other off as far as plot summaries are concerned. So here's my take on it:

At the end of the 20th century, humans lost a war with the Monsters. Afterwards, life returned to seeming normalcy but actually remains under the iron grip of the Monsters. Children disappear regularly, to become sacrifices to appease the Monsters. Many (most?) adults are aware of this, but out of fear or complacency, no one opposes the Monsters, and some even try gain favor with the conquerors. The last seeds of resistance lie in the Soldiers of Meros, who with their Ivermachines travel the land fighting Monsters and seeking the girl known as the Melody of Oblivion, who supposedly holds the key to freeing humanity. Bocca, a young man with a talent for archery, awakens as a Soldier of Meros and stars his journey.

(Hm, it seemed a lot more eloquent when I was composing it in my head. Ah well. Maybe I'll polish it later.)

So after watching the second episode, maybe there was off-screen yaoi in the first episode after all. o.o;; But now that Bocca has left his hometown and we've met another Monster, it seems they each have different... appetites, if you will, which will be refreshing. Also good to know they aren't all as ridiculous and gaudy as Hor.
