Slayers Evolution-R.

So I decided to finish Evolution-R first.
The ending really was like a cross between Slayers (what with having to defeat Rezo/Shabranigdo and needing the original soul to hold him back while Lina strikes) and NEXT (with all the angst about whether to cast the Giga Slave, and in the end doing it anyway). Well, I guess I have to finish NEXT before I can say how much the ending really drew from that.
I am ambivalent about the series as a whole. It did feel like a rehash in a lot of ways, and yet it was still fun as Slayers is meant to be, for the most part. Pokota grew on me, and Nama was fun while she was around. I felt like there could have been more depth to Ozel and Zuuma, but thinking back on the villains in Slayers and NEXT, they were fairly complex.
Like I said before, I'm not really happy with how Xellos was utilized. I think his whole reason for being around was stupid. (Then again, I thought the whole resolution of the plot was stupid, though I can't say what else I would have expected to happen. The real Rezo coming back? Still obsessed with sight? Who do you think is just around the corner?) Maybe if they spent more time explaining why Shabranigdo's "ghost" would somehow be anti-Mazoku the way Gaav was. (Or maybe I needed to listen more carefully to his ramblings.) So, really, Xellos was just around to provide omni powers whenever they were needed -- killing Zuuma, teleporting Lina-tachi the hell out of the way (I mean, you don't have the Water Dragon King to do it anymore) -- and, finally, at the end, providing a bit of exposition. Weak.
Especially considering he is the most powerful character after the bosses, it was weird that his attacks were pretty much the most ineffective, and after a while he kind of just gave up and focused on protecting Lina. It was really cool to see him in action, but if he had an ego I imagine his results would have been pretty deflating. I dunno. I guess he was there because he's a Slayers staple, and I'm glad he was there, but I guess I wish he had interacted with the rest of the group more instead of just show up whenever there was a major turning point in the plot.
...maybe I just still have that ridiculously long Xellos/Lina fic in my head. I thought it was cute when he protected her, and the way he seemed to admire her and respect her skills. *smacks self* I guess I need to hurry on to TRY, so I can get back to my true ship, Xellos/Filia. (And see whether I still believe in it.) Also to finish NEXT to reinforce my faith in Gourry/Lina.
