[ETA: My daemon has now achieved its final form, as . . . exactly what it started out as. ^^;; It actually went through at least 12 changes, and quite far-ranging ones at that, but somehow it ultimately went back to being an ocelot after all.]

I confess, I've never read any of His Dark Materials, but this thing looks cool, so I stole it from [livejournal.com profile] eaudrey after [livejournal.com profile] mergle recommended it. The basic idea is that by entering your assessment of my personality, you can affect the form of my daemon, until it's fixed in 12 days. The whole thing is really Flash intensive, just so you know.

[A direct link is forthcoming, although the website itself is still all Flash, so you can't get around that aspect.] They never sent me an email, so I'm just making up the link here: http://www.goldencompassmovie.com/?42742. If it doesn't work, go under the cut.

My daemon, Diodium, started as an ocelot. To change it, just mouse over and answer the questions.

Hrm. I find this intriguing. Everybody's applet has different selections of questions to answer, I presume based on the original answers to the longer quiz.
Soo... are you going to go read the books now? Or watch the movie? I just think it's a brilliant piece of marketing=)

I think each of the daemons has a set of characteristics, and then you answer whether you think the person has those characteristics. So as your daemon changes, the questions change, too, I think.

Oh, I'd always planned on reading the books . . . someday. ^^;; Now that there's going to be a movie, I might go for that first. Narnia seemed to suggest I enjoy the movie more when I'm not as familiar with the books (not that I hadn't read Narnia, but it'd been a while).

I made your lame old ocelot into a pretty butterfly. Haha!

I'm currently indefinitely in the middle of the first book and it seems decent. I think you'd probably really get into the whole daemons thing.

Woah, awesome. :D

Was it a fluffy wildcat thing when you did it? That wasn't the ocelot. I think it's kind of annoying that they don't tell you what the animals are. Also that they don't tell you all the possibilities. So far I've seen mine as the ocelot, the fluffy wildcat thing, a spider, and now the butterfly. In addition, I've seen others as tigers, rabbits, and ladybugs. So I guess there's a lot of variety in there.

I thought an ocelot was a wildcat thing...

But then again, your butterfly is actually a deformed Luna moth. So haha!

I too am irked they dont show all the possibilities, and also there's no history to show what shapes your daemon has taken on. My Remis changed shape 6 times before I rechecked it, and now I don't know what else it looked like.

It is a wildcat, but their version isn't fluffy. The fluffy thing looks pretty big, and ocelots are fairly small, AFAIK.

Yeah, I'm guessing it would take them a lot more resources to remember the history of each daemon. With the current system, all they need is the current form to generate the questions. The other problem with that, though, is that they can't have changes based on cumulative effect, e.g. everyone disagrees with a trait but not enough to change the form.

On the other hand, not having a history leads to people like me obsessively checking their daemon for changes, so maybe it doesn't save them resources after all. ;P

Who knows, it might've just been simpler to code it that way, and after all it's just an ad gimmick for a movie website (all Flash and no substance :P).

Yay for lynxes! :) "fluffy wildcat thing" sounds cuter, though.
