Kaleido Star.

I've been watching more Kaleido Star lately. I don't really have much to say about it generally; it's a solid show and fun to watch -- and highly recommended -- but not something I'm going to fangirl over. Perhaps part of the problem is the male leads (to the extent there are any).

I guess they can't do without an asshole to get Sora's blood boiling. I thought that was done after Yuri saw the light, but then they immediately bring in Leon. At least Suzaku Sakurai Takahiro does nasty better than Chiba Susumu. I mean, the latter did Castor (07-GHOST) and Sai (Hikaru no Go). What is he doing playing evil mastermind/saboteur? I guess he was cast back when Yuri was still the shining knight helping Sora along.

There are lots of examples of anime bad guys doing horrible things, but I feel like Yuri and Leon are near the worst for a show like this, where you have an approximately real-world, modern-day setting. The degree to which Yuri would go out of his way to destroy Sora-tachi, or Leon's incredible arrogance, are pretty overblown. Not that Kaleido Star is realistic, but... I dunno.

I guess Leon just grates on me. I want to keep watching to see when he finally gets his due (and May too), but he's so bad it's painful to watch. But now that I have looked up his seiyuu, maybe it will make it better to imagine Suzaku in his place. Talk about Spinzaku! XD

Thinking back, maybe a lot of the women Sora encountered were assholes, too. Even Layla was, at first, back when Yuri wasn't. But... they tend to be around fewer episodes, or they turn around faster. I suspect with Leon's it's going to be a loooong run.
